ATLANTA- Black Warrior Dance, in the words of Sam Cook, “Was born by the River…” and was founded by Artistic Director Daryl L. Foster who was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama near the banks of the Black Warrior River. Legendary Creek Chief Tuscaloosa defended West Alabama from Spanish incursion and the city and river were named after him. Tuscaloosa means Black Warrior. The company embodies that warrior spirit and uses that spirit to attack social justice issues and undue negative generational cycles to tell our stories through skillful, thoughtful, and stimulating choreography.
About the ALT|Forever:
ALT|FOREVER is our season’s opening performance inspired by fashion and journalism titan Andre Leon Talley. The performance will be a collaboration between director Daryl L. Foster; fashion designer, and Savannah College of Art and Design graduate Gibron Whitney Shepperd. Shepperd, a Council of Fashion Designers of America awardee, has created six garments that will coordinate with six sections of the ballet inspired by Talley’s life.
The narrative of the ballet draws from the triumph of a tremendously gifted individual who overcame the trials of his family, sexual abuse, and racism. The overarching thread in the work is “Perseverance and excellence overcome all!” The experience begins at 7 pm with a pre-show reception featuring a visual art piece titled “The Cotton Field”

LIFT Emerging Choreographers Showcase:
The LIFT Showcase premiered in 2010 and has presented the work of nearly 100 men. Now after a hiatus from the stage LIFT returns featuring the next generation of choreographers: Dontae Iverson, Michael Brown, and Rocket Collazo. These three artists will be creating work based on the male psyche. PSYCE: The Hearts, Minds, and Souls of Black Men will be the opening act of a dual-branded evening of dance.
