“Twenty years, ten albums, tours around the world, awards and nominations at home and rave reviews abroad: Frigg can justly be described as one of the greatest success stories in Finnish folk music.”—Finnish Music Quarterly
UGA Presents welcomes the acclaimed Finnish band Frigg to Athens for a high-energy concert Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Frigg brings its unmistakable blend of Nordic folk traditions and global roots influences to the stage. Known for virtuosic string playing, irresistible grooves, and joyful spontaneity, the band has earned international recognition for a sound that world music media has dubbed “nordgrass” — a fusion of Scandinavian folk music with bluegrass, Celtic, Balkan, and American roots traditions.
Since its debut album in 2002, Frigg has captivated audiences around the world. fRoots praised the group for its “massive groove and energy, powerful virtuosity, beautifully structured and inventive” music, while fans and critics alike marvel at the band’s ability to leap effortlessly between styles within a single set. With three violins, mandolin, guitar, and double bass, Frigg’s finely tuned ensemble sound delivers both dazzling precision and infectious momentum.
Frigg has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, appearing at major international festivals including WOMADelaide, the Cambridge Folk Festival, Rainforest World Music Festival, and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Their music has reached millions through broadcasts on A Prairie Home Companion and NHK World Japan, and their recordings have consistently topped both the World Music Charts Europe and the Transglobal World Music Chart. Thirteen albums into their career, Frigg has been featured multiple times on Songlines magazine’s prestigious Top of the World list.
The year 2025 marked the start of a new chapter for the band, with a new album, fresh collaborations, and an expanded six-member lineup. In Athens, Frigg will perform music from their recent releases Heritage and Dreamscapes.
Join us for a free pre-performance talk by a member of the band in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 p.m.This performance is generously supported by Rhonda Lucile Hicks, and is part of the series Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
