Petite Poppers, a division of Play on Players Children’s Theatre will be delighting audiences this weekend with their full version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. at Lumpkin County High School. Petite Poppers are a group of children from the ages of 8 to 8th grade who consistently put on top-notch children’s shows in the North Georgia area.
We all know the beloved story, a beautiful girl finds herself locked in a castle with a hideous beast and his staff of enchanted objects. This version based on the original Academy Award-winning animated film as well as the Broadway production which ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards. The show features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Sir Tim Rice.
Even if you’ve seen the show this year, this one is a must-see, especially due to the performance of Kayna Adams as Belle. Her singing is beautiful and acting superb. I haven’t seen “Home” performed with more passion, even in professional performances.
Expertly directed by POP and GTA alumni and former POPPER Heidi Rider with music direction by POPPER Halli Rider, this cast first performed a 15 minute cut of the show at the Junior Theater Festival Atlanta in January where they received Outstanding Ensemble.
This is a highly physical show and POP and GTA alumni Kaitlyn Gentry not only choreographed showstopping dance scenes but also expertly tackled stage combat during the battle in the castle scene.
The set and costume designs by DeAngela Chastain are superbly creative, a feast for the eyes, and highlight the amazing performances given by the whole cast and crew. The show is expertly accentuated by lighting designer Grant Key, POP alumni and GTA student.
Other Key-noteworthy performances include Reece Moseley as the Beast, Asa Chastain as Gaston and sidekick Jack Goebel as LeFou, Annie Cobb as Mrs, Potts, Karah Adams as Chip, Ian Johnson as Lumiere, silly girls Kena Adams, Fallon Keel, and Ashley Nef, and ensemble members Mitchell Dirkin, Abagail Lloyd, and Elin Silvers.
Beauty and the Beast Jr. runs tonight at 7:30 PM, Saturday at 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM, and Sunday at 3:30 PM. Tickets are $13 for adults $10 for Students and $8 for children 5 and under and can be purchased at ShowTix4U.
