I’m super excited about this show! FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is one that is near and dear to my heart. It’s been a childhood favorite of mine since my Dad took us the see the movie, directed by Norman Jewison, way back in 1971 when I was 5. It was special to him because the story has 5 girls, and there are 5 girls in our family. It quickly became a family favorite, and my sisters and I would re-enact the show in our living room on Sundays. I was always cast as Fruma Sarah because I had the operatic shriek and hated plying the role. Today I think it would be an awesome role to play, and can’t wait to see Gaten Matarazzo slay as the graveyard matron.
The first live performance I saw was in Milledgeville at Georgia College in 1977. It was everything we’d hoped it would be. A few years ago, had the honor of assisting City Sorings’ own Carly Ann Burg when she produced the state one-act award winning FIDDLER at Lambert High School.
This is such an important show highlighting the plight of the Jewish Communities in Ukraine set around 1905, as they were evicted from their homes and forced to flee the country at the hands of the Russian imperial government. The theme of tradition vs modernism is woven throughout the story as Tevye, our protagonist, carries on conversations with God to help him navigate his daughters’ choice of husbands and the managing of a household on a milkman’s budget, all while trying to maintain the Jewish traditions that he feels keeps his town if Anatevka in tact.
I’m also looking forward to seeing my dear newly engaged friends Haden Rider and Arielle Gellar (Mazel tov to the happy couple!) as well as my friend Brian Kurlander on the stage. I’m sure everyone in the cast will be amazing!
This is really a stellar cast and you don’t want to miss this show! Get your tickets today at CiITY SPRINGS THEATRE!!
