Enjoy a Darker Fairy Tale in Gainesville Theatre Alliance’s production of THE ARABIAN NIGHTS

Speakeysie News Desk – March 10, 2020

Gainesville Theatre Alliance will present Mary Zimmerman’s The Arabian Nights at UNG-Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre as the final mainstage performance in their 40th Anniversary season.

The Arabian Nights is a collection of darker stories intended for adults, as told by Scheherazade, a young harem girl who must create cliffhangers night after night to save her own life. Playwright Mary Zimmerman (Metamorphoses, The Secret in the Wings) expertly weaves Scheherazade’s tales of love, lust, comedy, and dreams utilizing a twelve-member cast and her trademark originality in staging. This beautiful play paints a mesmerizing portrait of the healing power of storytelling. Rated PG-13.

In conjunction with the show, GTA will present their Stage Tour on March 24 at 6:00 pm, in UNG-Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre. The show’s design team will explain the process behind bringing Scheherazade’s tales to life on stage. Visitors will also be treated to an in-rehearsal scene from the show. This event is free and open to the public.

The Arabian Nights opens Tuesday, April 7 at 7:30 pm, at University of North Georgia-Gainesville’s Ed Cabell Theatre in the Performing Arts/Continuing Education building, 3820 Mundy Mill Rd, Oakwood, GA. The show will run through April 18. Tickets are $18-20 for adults, $16-18 for seniors, and $12-14 for students. A preview performance is scheduled for Monday, April 6. Preview tickets go on sale March 23. A free reception will follow the opening night performance.
