I first saw India Tyree in Aida at the Atlanta Lyric Theater. Her performance blew me away and I became an instant fan. Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting her at the Iron Shield Brewery when Aurora hosted a Valentine’s concert, and she became an instant friend. India’s talent onstage is unmatched, and her graciousness off stage is endearing. I think one reason she is such a beautiful Cinderella who brings passion and depth to her character is because that’s who she truly is in life.

You’ve played several iconic roles, what are your feelings about playing Cinderella?
It is so fulfilling to play Cinderella ! The first black princess I ever saw as a kid was Cinderella played by Brandy on TV alongside the great Whitney Houston as her Fairy God-mother.
What have you done to prepare for the role?
To prepare for the role, I have definitely had to take care of my voice #1 but, really think harder during my character development process. Embracing Cinderella’s complexities was a priority for me. Princesses are typically always seen as floaty. I did make it a mission to find her depth. She is smart, driven, kind, and cares deeply about the future of her village and wants to influence a change in the mindset of the royal leaders.

What should audiences expect from Aurora’s version of this classic musical?
Expect to come and laugh and FEEL something. The cast is full of dynamic performers who have made great choices in bringing their characters to life! Expect a phenomenal orchestra in the LAC’s new stage and orchestra pit. Expect a production that is great for the whole family 🙂
What advice do you have for young aspiring actors?
My advice is to go see as much live theater as you can! My biggest learning tool is observing the artists around me and taking notes! Get into classes and train! It is never too late to start!

Thanks India my dear friend!! I hope you break many legs during this run, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. 💜💜💜
