Woodstock Arts Presents Audience Favorite Mamma Mia!

Speakeysie News Desk

WOODSTOCK, GA – Woodstock Arts is presenting the hit musical Mamma Mia! from May 1st through May 24th at the Woodstock Arts Theatre, bringing a vibrant, feel-good production, as well as the classic ABBA sound to local audiences.

Set on a small Greek island, Mamma Mia! features Sophie, a soon-to-be married young woman, and her single-mother Donna. It follows Sophie’s journey to uncover the identity of her father before her wedding day, bringing three men from her mother’s past back into her life. The production features well-known songs from the band ABBA, including “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me,” and “The Winner Takes It All” which help facilitate a heartfelt and humorous quest that focuses on love, identity and connection.

Directed by Zach Stolz, with choreography by Alex Self and music direction by Katie Berger Wood, the show combines dynamic staging, brilliant performances and a nostalgic soundtrack that appeals to a wide range of audiences.

Working on this show has been especially rewarding for Stolz who was trying to get the rights to perform this musical for many years, and for Berger Wood who has strong emotional ties to the production.

She first saw Mamma Mia! in London when she was 10 and since then has seen it many more times, especially with her husband working on productions of it all over the country. “We even got engaged on one opening night of Mamma Mia! seven years ago,” she said.

Berger Wood said the most challenging part of music directing was the sheer amount of music there is in the score, but that the cast took it in stride and rose to the challenge.

“I think the audience will be surprised at the amount of heart and real human emotion that shines through,” Berger Wood said. “I just love this team’s collaborative spirit and ability to take a silly, fun musical and turn it into something extremely special.”

Approximately two hours with a 15-minute intermission, this production is sure to wow the audience and bring the community together.

Performances will be held at Woodstock Arts Theatre, 8534 Main St., Woodstock, with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and select matinees at 2:30 p.m. An opening night reception will follow the May 1st performance. Tickets are available for advance purchase, with limited availability expected as performance dates approach. If you are looking for a night of fun entertainment, this is the show for you!
