ATLANTA – Theatrical Outfit (TO) is excited to conclude its 49thSeason with the return of Atlanta playwright turned the most produced playwright in the country – Lauren Gunderson’s THE REVOLUTIONISTS(June 3 – 28, 2026). Get ready to join the revolution(ists) and take a hilarious trip back in time with an all-star Atlanta cast and creative team. A bold vision for a bold city … this is the HEART OF ATLANTA.
Atlanta playwright Lauren Gunderson (Silent Sky & Christmas at Pemberley) returns to TO with THE REVOLUTIONISTS – an irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, and how we actually go about changing the world. It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. THERE’S REALLY ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT!
“THE REVOLUTIONISTS is a raucous and relevant comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror,” says Matt Torney, Artistic Director. “The age of equality that was supposed to follow the fall of Louis XIV does not extend to women, and the initial idealism of the revolutionaries has been replaced with terror and oppression. Four rebellious women – Abolitionist playwright Olympe De Gouge, fervent assassin Charlotte Courday, deposed queen Marie Antoinette, and former-slave-turned-freedom-fighter Marianne Angelle – set out to change their world without losing their heads. Lauren explores this real history and these real women with her trademark wit and glorious theatricality.”

Leading THE REVOLUTIONISTS is an all-star Atlanta ensemble that features Tiffany Denise Hobbs as Marianne Angelle, Bethany Anne Lind as Marie Antoinette, Erika Miranda as Charlotte Corday, and Courtney Patterson as Olympe de Gouges. Under the direction of Amber McGinnis, the design team includes: Choreography by Candy McLellan Davison, Scenic Design by Isabel & Moriah Curley-Clay, Costume Design by April Andrew Carswell, Lighting Design by Ben Rawson, Sound Design by Jeremiah Davison, Properties Design by Caroline Cook, and Stage Management by Lily Mayfield.
Torney continues: “One of the things I love most about this play is how it reflects on the power of language to both define our present reality, but also to imagine a better one. The play asks fascinating and urgent questions: What is the role of art in revolution? Is political change possible without violence? What is the role of women in all of this? And why does this play feel so relevant to today’s fractured world?”
