SYNCHRONICITY THEATRE CLOSES OUT ITS CURRENT VENUE WITH IN SPITE OF MY AMBIVALENCE
Speakeysie News Desk

ATLANTA, GA — Catherine Yu’s sharp, emotionally-layered WORLD PREMIERE new play arrives with powerful community events, post-show conversations, and a summer calendar built for connection.
Synchronicity Theatre closes its final season in its longtime Midtown home with In Spite of My Ambivalence by Catherine Yu — a funny, complicated, deeply-human new play about grief, desire, friendship, and the messiness of trying to move forward when life refuses to simplify itself. Directed by Lauren Morris, and starring Michelle Pokopak, Terence Lee, Terry Henry, Patrick Wade, and Amelia Fischer; the production runs June 5–28, 2026, and marks the final full production in Synchronicity’s current space.
After a season defined by transition, momentum, and reinvention, In Spite of My Ambivalence arrives with a different kind of energy: intimate but alive, emotionally honest without collapsing into heaviness, and rooted in the kind of grown-up storytelling that invites audiences to lean in closer. It is a play interested in contradiction — in the simultaneous pull toward connection and retreat, humor and heartbreak, clarity and confusion.
“This production feels like the right final note for this space,” said Producing Artistic Director Rachel May. “It’s intelligent, emotionally textured, unexpectedly funny, and deeply alive. In true Synchronicity fashion, it is also deeply theatrical, with gorgeous projection and scenic design, and original music. As we prepare to leave the building we’ve called home for over a decade, we wanted to end this chapter with work that reflects who we are — ambitious, evolving, and always deeply committed to bold storytelling.”
Known for championing new voices and emotionally resonant work, Synchronicity selected In Spite of My Ambivalence for its beautiful writing and emotional sophistication. The play follows five people circling questions of intimacy, trauma, identity, loneliness, and healing, all while navigating the awkward humor and sharp edges of everyday life.
The production also anchors a robust calendar of community activations, partnerships, and audience events designed to turn the final weeks in the space into a gathering point for both longtime supporters and new audiences.

A world premiere production
A dancer who can’t dance spends days wrapped in a bed sheet. A woman and a doctor dig into a troubled past. A man alone wrestles with desire. A stranger carries the weight of a life shaped by war.
With piercing grace, this world premiere follows five lives—intersecting across war zones, bedrooms, and therapy sessions—as they navigate the fragile space between devastation and hope. Each encounter leaves an imprint, drawing a shifting map of connection, disconnection, and the relentless search for healing.
Written by Catherine Yu, In Spite of My Ambivalence is a poetic, unflinching exploration of how we process trauma, how we love in its shadow, and how survival is rarely a straight path.
